SYMBOL「ゆ」, 2025
The sphere in SYMBOL「
displays the gentle, familiar hiragana ゆ — a symbol used in Japan to
mark hot springs and public bathhouses. This single character opens an
emotional portal into the nation’s disappearing communal spaces: the
sentō, where warmth, routine, and human intimacy shaped daily life for
generations.
By affixing ゆ to an industrially patched globe drifting
in an indifferent sky, Sashie transforms this modest sign into a poetic
relic. The character radiates a sense of domestic memory and fragile
tenderness, contrasting sharply with the metallic, deteriorating surface
of the sphere. It evokes warmth within coldness, ritual within
abandonment, humanity within decay.
In this work, ゆ becomes the last
surviving echo of communal care — a symbol of comfort extracted from its
original context and set adrift. Sashie elevates this everyday mark
into a vestige of cultural nostalgia, suggesting that even the smallest
signs of ordinary life hold profound emotional charge when everything
around them has vanished.

Sospeso in un cielo indifferente, il segno ゆ campeggia su una sfera metallica rattoppata, trasformando un simbolo modesto in un piccolo oggetto poetico.
