Pump, 2016–2025
In Pump, Sashie returns to the archetypal floating sphere, but imbues it with a more industrial, utilitarian aura. The orb is coated in corrugated metal, weathered panels, vents, and window fragments that echo the architecture of factories, workshops, and production sites. A faint plume rising from its top hints at internal activity — a beating mechanical heart still functioning despite the desolation surrounding it.
The title Pump suggests a mechanism designed to extract, circulate, or sustain. Yet the sphere floats inertly above a barren landscape of crushed debris, prompting the question: What is this device pumping, and for whom?
Sashie hints at the ghost of a system that has outlasted its purpose. The object becomes a symbol of persistence — a machine that continues its cycle even when civilisation has emptied around it.
Pump embodies the tension between usefulness and futility, capturing a world where infrastructure survives but context is lost. In this quiet paradox, the work becomes an elegy for human industry: a final, stubborn pulse in an environment that has forgotten its rhythm.
