In an exciting collaboration with THINKSPACE, Dorothy Circus Gallery is proud to present the upcoming exhibition by the amazing Joe Sorren "Per Aspera Ad Astra".
"Per Aspera Ad Astra," is Latin phrase meaning "through hardships to the stars," aptly titles Joe Sorren’s latest series of thirteen mesmerizing works. Sorren's series is a visual journey through the zodiac, with each painting imbued with the mystical qualities and characteristics of its corresponding astrological sign. The zodiac has long fascinated humanity, symbolizing the cosmic influences that shape our lives and personalities. Sorren's work brings these influences to life, presenting them as dream-like visions that captivate and inspire.
As an example let's take the artwork Scorpio. A sign of passion, depth, and transformation, thrives in the realms of mystery and introspection. In One Fine Day In The Middle Of A River, Sorren captures the sign’s enigmatic nature—its unwavering intensity, resilience, and the eternal dance between instinct and self-awareness. He alludes to the fable of The Scorpion and the Frog, not as a tale of inevitability, but as a reflection of Scorpio’s profound self-exploration.
The figure floats, immersed in the currents of emotion and destiny, not merely a victim of its nature but a seeker navigating the depths of its own psyche. The water, vast and unknowable, mirrors Scorpio’s boundless capacity for reinvention and transformation. This intensity has long driven some of history’s most visionary artists, including Marie Laurencin, Dostoevsky, René Magritte, and Hilma af Klint—creators who channelled their personal struggles into powerful works of art.
