Every day, I am reminded of the impossibility of adhering to this particular commandment. This painting, however, is less metaphorical and more direct. I had a neighbor, who was particularly annoying, and I used to imagine myself arguing with him in my head. The gestures of the characters in the painting were taken from an Etruscan tomb relief depicting a battle scene. I take pleasure in using the classic gestures of ancient art, allowing the petty dispute between my neighbor and me to be elevated to the status of a magnificent struggle for a noble cause.
