ROA: Suovetaurilia: Dorothy Circus Rome | Solo Show

31 Oct 2014 - 20 Jan 2015

Following the big success of the event Spray for Your Rights – Step#1, in which the Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra donated to the city of Rome the wonderful mural dedicated to Malala Yousafzai, with the goal to debate on women’s rights in the world, we are glad to present the Step#2, which will bring on stage the Belgian artist ROA, one of the most impressive talent of the international Contextual Mural Art, creator of one of the most majestic street art works in Rome, thanks to 999Contemporary.
From October 31st till January 20th 2014, Dorothy Circus Gallery will exhibit “Suovetaurilia”, the brand new solo show by the well known artist, expressly dedicated to Rome and its audience.

In Roman history, “Suovetaurilia” refers to the ritual animal sacrifice of a pig (sus), a sheep (ovis) and a bull (tauris). Herewith ROA alludes to the historical context of Rome, with a metaphorical wink to the present fate of animals. ROA will echo in his work the killing of thousands of exotic animals that used to be staged as an entertainment industry in ancient Rome, parallel to the contempory practice of animal trafficking. ROA will completly change the usual look of the gallery, creating a unique set with his charming, original and accurate creations.

His production is a site specific work, created during his visit to Rome: he gathered the materials of old Italian cabinets, doors and scrap, to embody the spirit of the location into his new work. He assambled the materials he found on this Roman scavenges to give birth to his charactristic interactive artworks, which enfold in different angles and views.
After the inauguration of the solo exhibition at Dorothy Circus Gallery, ROA will paint a mural as a part of the “Step#2: Diversity” of the project “Spray for your Rights”.

ROA’s work refers to the theme of bio-diversity on the Earth, with a specific attention to animals, in order to represent the transitory nature of life in accordance to our overall ecosystem. Recently, in Italy, the bear Daniza was killed as a result of the distortion between the animal and the human world: another tragic example of the duality of modern human life versus Mother Earth.

“Once again the right to life has been violated without any reason. Once again the “otherness” is a predestinated victim of violence and tyranny. Each and everyday we make terrible mistakes. We recognize it but we are not strong enough not to repeat the same mistakes over and over. So we keep on suffering for it.

There is no progress, there is no hope for the future if we get used to pain and sorrow. Let’s hope our tears will rise as the flag of a mankind that will truly fight for the right to life for every creature on this earth.
We devote this artwork to Daniza, so that her pain will not be forgotten”.
Part of the proceeds from ROA exhibition’s sales will be devolved to animal-right associations and will support the project “Cavalcando l’Autismo”, organized by the association “L’Emozione non ha voce”, in which eleven boys and girls, affected by autism spectrum disorders, will horse trekking Umbria and the Chianti area from August 31st to September 6th 2015.
