Maggiori informazioni

Jonathan Viner’s Inciting Incident draws the viewer into an intensely intimate portrait, using dramatic colour and close cinematic framing to create a sense of anticipation. The composition is dominated by saturated shades of crimson, pink and violet, enveloping the figure in an almost monochromatic atmosphere. Her face fills the canvas, bringing the viewer unusually close while Viner’s meticulous attention to her eyes, lips and jewellery heightens the intensity of the encounter.

The hibiscus nestled into her hair provides a striking visual anchor, echoing the surrounding red tones while introducing an association with beauty, sensuality and the natural world. Small metallic details, the nose ring, rings and hair clip. catch the light against the softness of her skin and hair, punctuating the composition and guiding the eye across the surface.

The title Inciting Incident, a term used in storytelling to describe the event that sets a narrative into motion, reinforces the painting’s cinematic quality. The woman’s wide, attentive gaze and hand raised across her forehead suggest a moment of heightened awareness, as though she has just witnessed something beyond the limits of the canvas. Viner leaves that event deliberately unseen, transforming the portrait into a suspended moment of narrative tension and inviting the viewer to imagine the story that has only just begun.
