In #992, Masao Yamamoto constructs an image of extreme poetic rarefaction, in which the human body appears to emerge and dissolve simultaneously within a cosmic and immaterial space. The figure suspended in darkness seems fragile, almost incorporeal, traversed by a constellation of luminous marks that evoke stardust, memory, or particles of time.
As often occurs in Yamamoto’s practice, photography ceases to function as a simple visual document and instead becomes a meditative object. The small scale of the work compels the viewer to approach the image intimately, establishing a slow and contemplative relationship that recalls the Japanese aesthetic tradition of miniature and perceptual silence.
The fragmented and partially dissolved body suggests a reflection on the transience of existence and the fragility of human presence. The figure never appears fully defined; rather, it seems to oscillate between appearance and disappearance, between embodiment and memory. In this sense, Yamamoto creates an image deeply connected to the sensibility of mono no aware — that melancholic awareness of the ephemeral nature of things that permeates much of Japanese visual and philosophical culture.
The use of the gelatin silver print with manual interventions further amplifies this intimate and tactile dimension. The photographic surface appears almost worn by time, like a rediscovered relic or a fragment of memory surviving the dissolution of matter. The photograph does not simply represent a body, but the emotional trace of its existence.
Through #992, Yamamoto transforms the photographic image into a silent meditation on mortality, memory, and the fragile boundary between presence and absence.
